This is the last painting in the series of ten I completed during my two months in Portugal.  When I look back to the trip I really had to face a feeling of solitude when the weather turned bad, just me and my brain alone for a long stretch and in a way I suppose I had to face myself and in fact dig quite deep to keep my s*** together.  Of course this probably sounds rather ridiculous, being as I am a fortunate individual without much responsibility (other than the never ending need for ready money) having a two month jaunt abroad, lucky me right?

As an artist I spend a lot of my time alone working or thinking about what to paint next, in many ways this might not be healthy but on the other hand I am constantly facing myself, pushing myself, frustrating myself with a chorus of my own thoughts, straying as they can into 'glass half empty' territory on occasion. 

But then in my work I am told there is much levity and joyfulness.  I look now at the work produced in Portugal and despite the solitude I feel as though the best of me came out in the paintings. The part of me that is always searching for answers in the light.

When the weather was bad it would sometimes clear in the evenings so I'd head out for a wander around the old town of Lagos.  I love how the cypress trees jut out between the houses, they really denote being in a 'holiday' place for me, typically with sunshine! So this is my impression of how those evenings felt.
