Passing By (Original, Signed and Framed)

Last year, close to the beginning of August on a day when the afternoon sun was sticking to earth with a bright enthusiasm I was in a particularly good mood.  I had just visited The Courtauld Gallery in London, where on floor 3 there is a captivating collection of impressionist and post impressionist paintings by artists I love.  I have to admit I was unaware of how beautiful the gallery is and the range of paintings on display therein.

Seeing paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne and Monet, amongst many others was really uplifting. With the weather so fine, London looked like a work of art passing through the backstreets, just beyond Somerset House in the theatre district.  In a small square along Museum Street there were these beautiful trees against some slightly tired, but attractive buildings where the contrast of light and shade was stark.  I made a quick sketch and took some photos to use back in the studio at some point.  

It took me a while to come back to this emotion and image.  In time the image that I had has spread into a painting that in some way conjures up a holiday mood, where the location is less relevant, it's more about the mood. Using oil paints I hope I've been able to create a sense of peace and quiet in this space, that's how it felt.  It was later that I I added the figure in the corner of the image, perhaps me, or all of us - passing by a lovely moment.
