One of the things I enjoy about painting is the range of subjects and emotions you can translate into work. Sometimes I'm surprised by the end result and the experience of painting itself. 

Whilst in Portugal I attended a 'breathwork' workshop, something I've never done before. The workshop was delivered in a very tranquil space, by a facilitator who held the room. I had envisaged something akin to meditation but the experience for me was much more potent. 

In essence you breathe in very deeply and force the breath out and keep doing it for a duration that lasts for some time, enough (as we were warned) to pass through cramping, particularly in the hands - very weird to induce this by just breathing.

After this I can only say that the feeling I had was a profound one, it was as if I detached from myself.  With eyes still closed, what I saw, which felt very real, was myself standing alone.  Bear with me, if this all sounds a bit woo woo - I could see myself as a whole person and felt a strong urge to hug myself, as if saying 'it's okay man, you're going to be just fine.' I could feel the weight of my own head on my own shoulder and feel the back of my own neck.  I know. It was very strange, but also captivating.  I felt great for the rest of the day. 

So what was the message from this inner and outer realm it seemed that I conjured up for myself. In a nutshell I would say it clearly sends a message to be kinder to myself, something I definitely struggle with.  I think that message to all of us is important.  

This painting came of its own accord, I've never painted anything like it before. I was thinking about my experience but also how good it feels to be held, to have arms around you, its kinda funny that we do it, but there's such a caring virtue to it that we should give more attention to.  So perhaps this painting is all about giving yourself and those you care about a good hug.  Hold on to them.  Hold on to you.
