Life goes on.

At times its easy to look backwards, to try and reconfigure the past, which in the end is a poor use of time and energy.  The harder I try to bridge the present with the past, the more I fantasise about what might now be better if I'd made different choices, if I'd not behaved a certain way. 

What might I have gained, what might I not have lost?  This is perhaps an evolutionary trait, enabling us to learn from past mistakes and it seems to me as though painful memories dominate, as these are the emotions we want to avoid repeating in the future, right?

There is only today.  The past, as we all know cannot be altered or amended and so in many respects we should or could let it be.  Rather it is through the shimmering spectacle of what lays beyond that I constantly need to press into mind. The pathway I'm walking is my own, and I must remind myself there is equal possibility that joy waits around the corner, rather than a lurking dread ready to pounce and create a jarring, difficult future memory.  

It is partly for this reason I enjoy painting pathways, transitions in space that move us forwards literally and perhaps figuratively serving as a reminder of the day, of the present and future, one to be hopeful for and not fearful of.  Today I choose the beyond at its most positive: All the light, all the possibility, all the friendship, all the potential love and kindness that lays in waiting, I hope, for all of us.

Often it is only after I finish a painting that its hidden values or attributes begin to come into focus, that an essence of meaning lifts from the paper or canvas and is set free.
