There's a couple of lines in a Red Hot Chili Pepper's song called The Hunter, which go as follows: 'Woke up this morning like I always do. I still like to think that I'm new'.  Simple and heartfelt is my interpretation in which I imagine it relates to a sentiment of beginning again with a kind of gratefulness, brand new once more as morning breaks from the unique strangeness of sleep and not being 'present' in the world. 

If only things were so simple, that we could feel brand new each day without burden or prejudice.  I often try an articulate what I like about painting.  I am trying to 'paint a feeling'.  Something that is so very difficult to do in words, particularly to verbalise in the heat of a moment,  when we might get tangled up in ourselves because our emotions create both a strong physical and mental reaction.  

Sometimes I wonder why I like to paint views looking up through branches at blue skies.  Do you think it's because when we are overwhelmed we sometimes look upwards?  As if trying to escape the gravity that binds us to the earth and all that happens here. There could be something in that, a kind of fleeting escape plan.  It could also be that I just find this aspect very beautiful.  

Blossom begets newness, every year the springtime cycle reboots and us along with it.  We are new once more in the world and whatever happens I feel we must cherish that.  This painting is my attempt to hold beauty, fragility, hopefulness and love in one frame. 

I'll leave you with some words from Jack Kerouac 'On soft Spring nights I'll stand in the yard under the stars - Something good will come out of all things yet - And it will be golden and eternal just like that - There's no need to say another word.'
